El campus de Burjassot de la Universitat de Valencia ha inaugurado el superordenador "Tirant", capaz de realizar 4,5 billones de cálculos por segundo y cuya capacidad es la de 512 ordenadores personales integrados juntos. Su nombre es un homenaje al héroe de la novela "Tirant Lo Blanc".
Integrado en la Red Española de Supercomputación (RES), "Tirant" cuenta con 512 procesadores interconectados con una red de alta velocidad y 14 terabytes de disco duro. En total tiene una potencia de 4,5 teraflops, ampliable incorporando nuevos nodos.
"Tirant" ha costado 1,2 millones de euros, aunque su elevado rendimiento permitirá "devolver sobradamente el dinero invertido", según destacó el rector de la Universitat, Francisco Tomás, quien no dudó en afirmar que esta instalación contribuirá a mejorar el desarrollo industrial del país.
En este sentido, en los ordenadores de la RES se ejecutan las aplicaciones más complejas y ambiciosas de los investigadores españoles para dar solución a problemas que serían inabordables sin un gran ordenador como los que integran la red. Actualmente se trabaja en temas que van desde el diseño de fármacos al estudio de materiales, pasando por la calidad del aire, la simulación de experimentos de física de altas energías o la simulación de plasma en reactores de fusión nuclear.
